How we can help

If you have been bereaved by an epilepsy related death, we are here to listen and to help you decide your next steps.

You may be recently bereaved and need to know more about what happens next; you may want to know more about SUDEP, or you may have been bereaved for some time and want to know what you can do to help reduce future deaths.

As a charity we have been supporting people bereaved by epilepsy since 1995 and have extensive experience in the issues that are raised. The staff on our support line have worked with people affected by sudden death for many years and their understanding of epilepsy deaths, especially SUDEP is second to none. They are there to support you at your time of need.

Counselling

Have you been affected by an epilepsy related death? The SUDEP Action telephone counselling service is a confidential service, available when you need it.

Sadly, access to local counselling services can be patchy, often with long waiting lists. But after the traumatic experience of a sudden death our service can help you:

  • explore your thoughts and feelings
  • discuss strategies that may help you in your day-to-day life.

Telephone counselling is just like a face-to-face session with a qualified counsellor. You can arrange sessions for a time that is good for you. If you are 16 or over, we can offer counselling for up to eight sessions.

Supported involvement

After a death, the bereaved often need to do something, they need to be busy.  After losing someone to an epilepsy related death many go on to raise awareness of the risks associated with epilepsy. Some campaign for better services, or visit their health providers with information in the hope that what they do will reduce the number of deaths.

However, grief can be exhausting and your journey will be full of ups and downs. We are here to provide information that may help you achieve your goals and to help you manage what you do, we provide support and a listening ear.
